Mary Jane's Pa is a 1917 American silent drama film directed by Charles Brabin and William P.S. Earle and starring Marc McDermott, Mildred Manning and Eulalie Jensen. Cinematography John W. Brown. A Vitagraph Blue Ribbon Feature presented by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith. It is based on the 1906 play Mary Jane's Pa by Edith Ellis, later adapted into a 1935 sound film of the same title.
"For many years the mother had struggled along bringing up her two girls, and earning for her little family a respected place in the community. Her husband, the father of her girls, was one of those shiftless mortals, a dreamer, a wastrel, but a lovable fellow if you could overlook his weaknesses. Years before he dropped out of sight. He had simply taken himself off and left his little family to work out its own salvation. And now he has come back, to find his wife supporting herself and her girls by publishing a daily newspaper, a genuine influence for good in the little town; his older daughter, in the tender years of early womanhood, on the brink of perilous romantic adventure; and to his dismay, another man seeking a hand of his wife in marriage. No one in the town knew him, for this was not the former home of the family, so the wife, in compassion, gave him the refuge of her house, with the understanding that his identity as her husband must remain a secret. But could it remain a secret? In the working out of the destinies of these lives from a situation so delicate, so full of possibilities for tragedy, every human emotion finds its play. And just because it is so deeply human, Mary Jane's path has stirred the souls of many thousands who have seen the stage production. And now, presented as a photoplay, its appeal will reach into every corner of the land where the hearts of men and women can respond in sympathy with life's problems."
